In your PRN role as Instructor for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at VUMC, you will be responsible for coordinating clinical with didactic education. You will instruct students effectively and prepare them for successful employment in their chosen field, which helps assure the institution achieves its mission and educational objectives. You also will support the Program Director by participating in program evaluation and curriculum development.

u Coordinate clinical education with didactic education under the leadership of the Program Director
u Evaluate and ensure the effectiveness of the clinical affiliate/clinical education centers
u Gain a working knowledge of the Program's satisfactory academic progress policy, the standards of conduct, practical course requirements, grading policies and criteria, and state regulations within 30 days of employment.
u In the Program Director's absence, teach according to the Program's published curriculum, using all teaching aids and handouts provided unless deviations are approved.
u Learn any new course or teaching methods introduced during employment and follow them consistently.
u A lways Maintain a thorough knowledge of the Program's mission and educational objectives and strive to attain them.
u Prepare, coordinate, and participate in new student orientation according to policy and as assigned.
u Organize and prepare for each class/lab session. Organize the necessary handouts, teaching aids, and equipment prior to starting the class.
u Follow and supplement published lesson plans.
u Project enthusiasm and excitement. Practice proper grammar and pronunciation. Be careful of tone, volume and clarity of expression.
u Maintain a thorough, accurate and current knowledge of the subject matter taught.

u Properly prepare students for the applicable national credentialing examinations.
u Monitor and fairly enforce the institution's policies, standards of conduct and state regulations.
u Never release private information on any student without obtaining written authorization from the student (or parent/guardian if applicable) on the designated form.
u Be readily available for students during scheduled hours or arrange for replacement if unavailable. Maintain accessibility for student inquiries in the Program Director's Absence.
u Participate in meetings, in-service, professional development, and other institutional activities as required and provide documentation of attendance, as requested.
u Communicate regularly and provide support to DMS Program Director (both didactic and clinical)
u Communicate regularly with the Director of Programs in Allied Health

1)Possess a minimum of an Associate's Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or an Associate's Degree and a Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
2)Demonstrate proficiency in teaching methodology, supervision, instruction, evaluation and guidance
3)Possess the appropriate credentials specific to the concentration offered.
4)Possess a minimum of two years of full-time experience as a registered Sonographer in the professional Sonography field.
This is a PRN position for needed availability of at least 16 Hours per/week between the hours of 8:00AM and 5PM, Monday-Friday.
Department/ Unit Summary:
The VUMC Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program offers:
* Small class size (5 students)
* 18-month certificate curriculum accredited in General Sonography
* Six (6) unique rotations of integrated didactic and clinical courses (requires an average attendance of 33 hours per week)
* Didactic and clinical requirements to prepare graduates for certification with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
* Introductory coursework for vascular sonography
* Exposure to other sonographic specialties (echocardiography, neurovascular, infertility/reproductive medicine, genetic screening/testing)
* Research opportunities
* Interaction with Medical Staff in the clinical and classroom settings
Upon successful completion of all program requirements, graduates are provided the documentation necessary to apply for certification exams with the ARDMS, specifically, Sonographic Principles and Instrumentation, Abdomen, and Obstetrics/Gynecology
